Maya Dodson joins the Flames for WNBL27

The Sydney Flames have added more size and athleticism to its new-look roster, with American big Maya Dodson signing for the WNBL27 season, pending WNBL review and approval.

Following a breakout season in Spain with Leganés, the 191cm Dodson heads to Sydney after consistently producing on the floor with multiple double-doubles and a season-high 23-point performance against Estudiantes.

After collegiate stops at Stanford and Notre Dame, where she obtained a Bachelor of Engineering & Ethics and a Master's in Management,  Dodson was selected by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2022 WNBA Draft before later joining the Minnesota Lynx on a training camp contract in 2023.

Flames Head Coach Renae Garlepp said Dodson’s presence adds another important piece to the group being built in Sydney.

“We’re just thrilled,” Garlepp said on Maya’s addition.

“She brings size, athleticism, mobility and a strong defensive presence, and we feel she’s a perfect fit for both the style and environment we’re building.

“We’re excited to see the impact she’ll have with us.”

Dodson said the timing felt right to make the move to the WNBL as she enters the next stage of her professional career.

“After playing in New Zealand during my first professional season, playing in the WNBL was always at the back of my mind,” Dodson said.

“Going into my fifth season, it felt like the right time to make that move. When I spoke with Renae, I really connected with her vision and what she's building in Sydney. I'm excited for the opportunity to be part of it.”

Dodson becomes the latest addition to an increasingly competitive Flames roster as the club continues to build toward WNBL27.
