Hoops Capital today announced that current assistant coach of the Sydney Flames, Renae Garlepp, will step up as Head Coach, bringing her expertise and energy to the team in a new leadership capacity.

CEO of Hoops Capital Mark Thompson said “We’re extremely excited that Renae Garlepp is taking on the Head Coach position, continuing her strong work with the Flames this season. She’s an incredible leader, lifting others up around her, and we’re proud to support Renae as she takes this next step in her coaching career.”

Garlepp’s coaching career includes accolades such as Assistant Coach for the Opals, two-time NBL1 Coach of the Year, and an NBL1 championship. Garlepp was also appointed Head Coach of the Gems and in the 2025 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup, leading them to bring home a silver medal from the Czech Republic and was named ‘Best Coach’ of the tournament.

Garlepp said she’s excited to take on the position. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead the Flames. I’m excited to work with this team and staff, and my focus is to help them thrive and be the best they can be.”

The appointment comes after Guy Molloy announced he was stepping down as Head Coach over the weekend and taking on an advisory position within the club.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with Guy for the last three years, and I deeply admire and respect him as a coach, leader and mentor. He has been one of the greatest influences on my coaching journey, and I will be forever grateful for our time together.”

Co-owner of Hoops Capital, Luc Longley, praised Garlepp’s leadership saying, “Renae made an incredible mark on the court throughout her playing career and has already achieved so much, so early, in her coaching career - from NBL1, WNBL and on the global stage with the Opals and Gems. She brings great strength and energy to the team every single day. She has our full support and I look forward to seeing her in action this season.”

Garlepp’s first game as Head Coach will be when the Flames take on Townsville in North Queensland on Saturday 6 December.
