The Sydney Flames have signed Renae Garlepp to a two-year deal as Head Coach, formally launching a new era for the Club and a bold, long-term vision for women’s basketball in New South Wales.

Following her time as interim head coach, Garlepp now takes the reins permanently as the Flames commit to a future built on toughness and a fiercely competitive identity.

This appointment reflects a clear shift for the Flames with Hoops Capital backing Garlepp to shape the next chapter of the Club.

CEO of Hoops Capital, Mark Thompson, said the Club’s belief in Garlepp was absolute.

“This is a statement of intent from us. We are investing in Renae because we believe she is the right leader to build something powerful and enduring at the Sydney Flames.

“She is driven, she is uncompromising on standards, and she is deeply connected to the NSW basketball pathway. And this is why it is not a short-term appointment. We are backing Renae’s vision for the future of this Club.”

Garlepp has a track record of success across elite, national and international programs. Her coaching career spans the highest levels of the game, from leading NBL1 programs to championships and earning two NBL1 Coach of the Year honours, to shaping the next generation of talent on the global stage.

She was part of the Australian Opals coaching group that claimed the FIBA Asia Cup in 2024, and later guided the Australian Gems to a silver medal at the 2025 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup in the Czech Republic, where she was recognised as Best Coach of the Tournament.

Garlepp has proven she can win and knows how to build programs that perform under pressure.

"Growing up in NSW, this state and this club played a huge role in shaping who I am.”

"To lead the team that represents all of New South Wales is something I’m proud and excited to do. For me, this is about building a program that’s tough, driven, and a proud reflection of the state."

"Looking forward to recruiting a team where players are challenged, supported, and thrive on and off the court.”
